Previous Marion Co. Attorney Chosen as New Judge for 8th Judicial District
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Former Marion Co. attorney has been chosen by Governor Laura Kelly as the new judge for the 8th Judicial District.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said on Friday (Oct. 15) that she had appointed Susan Robson, of Marion, to the vacant 8th Judicial District of Marion Co., created by the retirement of Chief Justice Michael Powers.
“Susan is an accomplished lawyer with decades of legal experience,” said Governor Kelly. “As a longtime resident of Marion County, she has demonstrated her commitment to the law, as well as to the county and its citizens. I know she will serve the people of the Eighth Judicial District on the bench well. “
Governor Kelly said Robson has been in private practice at Marion since 2017 and has represented clients in a variety of areas including civil affairs, criminal defense, contract law and tax law. She is currently the District Attorney for the City of Marion, Goessel and Durham as well as the District Attorney for Hillsboro City.
Governor Kelly said Robson was the attorney for Marion Co. from 2001 to 2017. She is a member of the Kansas Bar Association and the City Attorney Association of Kansas and has been active in community organizations.
In addition to his legal practice, Governor Kelly said Robson volunteered with the local baseball and basketball teams. She graduated from Kansas State University and received her law degree from Washburn University School of Law in 1990. She lives in Marion with her husband.
“In my thirty years of practicing law, I have been involved in almost every type of case that would go to a district court judge,” said Robson. “I am honored that Governor Kelly and the Nominating Commission have given me the opportunity to serve my community as a judge.
Governor Kelly said district court judges for the 8th Judicial District are appointed by the governor and chosen from candidates proposed by a district nominating committee. She said the district judges of the nominating commission are subject to retention elections every 4 years.
The other candidates selected by the district nominating committee were Judge Keith Collett (Dickinson Co., Magistrate District Judge) and Judge Douglas Jones (5th Judicial District, Magistrate Judge).
