Cities in Pasadena area see gains in latest sales tax revenue report

The most recent monthly sales tax report showed that most cities in the Pasadena area have seen a substantial increase in their income.
The August sales tax report was released on October 8 and detailed the revenue generated during the last month of summer.
The city of Pasadena had a robust August, totaling $ 3.12 million in tax revenue. That figure was about $ 508,068 – or 19.5% – ahead of the $ 2.61 million that went into city coffers in August 2020.
Overall, retail sales during the summer months were good in Pasadena. The city collected $ 9.99 million during that period, which is $ 932,380 more than the $ 9.06 million raised in the summer of 2020.
The city’s summer tax revenue also compares favorably with that generated before COVID 2019, when summer months revenue was $ 9.12 million.
La Porte, Deer Park see gains
The town of La Porte also saw a sizable double-digit percentage increase in sales tax revenue year over year.
In August 2021, the municipality generated $ 967,997, which is 19.3% more than the $ 811,607 produced the same month last year.
While La Porte’s sales tax revenue in August was the first time in three months that the city failed to generate at least $ 1 million in revenue from these sources, the summer months have been sunny for the city economy.
In June, July and August of this year, La Porte brought in $ 3.34 million in sales tax. In 2020, the city totaled $ 2.88 million, or $ 462,348 less.
The neighboring Deer Park also had a good August.
The sales tax figures for this month were $ 847,977, an increase of 6.4% from the $ 796,752 reported in the same month last year. Deer Park’s tax revenue in August also exceeded the same month in 2019, when it produced $ 822,097.
During the summer, the sales tax situation in Deer Park has evolved steadily from last year. This summer, the municipality raised $ 2.69 million, while the summer of 2020 generated $ 2.48 million.
Summer total south of Houston was close to $ 1 million
South Houston tried to hit the $ 1 million mark for summer sales tax revenue, but did not fail.
The three month period saw the city raise $ 989,180. By comparison, the summer of 2020 produced some $ 126,290 less at $ 862,629.
Considering only the month of August, tax revenues amounted to $ 326,066, an increase of 24.23% from the $ 262,460 collected last August.
Only the smallest towns in the region experienced a decline in sales tax revenues.
Morgan’s Point revenue totaled $ 56,132 in August, down 5.9% from the $ 59,632 generated in the same month last year.
Shoreacres saw a similar drop when its sales taxes hit $ 12,737, down $ 856 from the $ 13,593 reported in August 2020.
The September sales tax report will be issued in mid-November.
